Linux, Num Lock, and eBay

So I’ve been looking around on eBay for interesting deals — specifically for G4 Cubes, but also for cheap iMacs that’ll run OS X because Thais needs a computer.

Earlier today I was watching a auction for an older iMac with 512 MB of RAM (which should’ve been unheard-of in the days that computer was new). It was going for $140 and I was planning on sweeping in last minute with a bid of $152, unfortunately my numlock wasn’t on. If you run Linux you’ll know that it never is by default unless you manually configure it to be. It’s because of laptop keyboards, AFAIK. If you have a keyboard where the number keys are around the U, I, O, J, K, L, M, ,, ., area with a Fn-key modifier, then default numlock will really trip you up.

So much for my ninja-skillz.

Thank you! I’ve been wondering why Linux on my laptop was so screwy with my keyboard, and to think it was so simple, the numlock key. Anyways, thanks, and sorry about your lost auction.
