Michael Moore at UVSC

I just returned from Orem to see Micahel Moore speak at UVSC. He was fantastic. It was really awesome of him to come to Utah, of all places, and it was really awesome of the UVSC Student Government Officers to stick to their guns in the face of all the local hostility (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Moore spent the first five minutes praising their gumption to an almost steady standing ovation.

Atendees were largely supporters although more than a few hecklers seemed to trip Moore up more than once. I wonder how accustomed to being heckled Moore is when he speaks in less conservative states.

I will be keeping an eye on the evening news to see how our local media spins their respective coverage. Although an early sample at the Salt Lake Tribune’s site is interesting to read. Derek P. Jensen states:

“Only two more weeks of George W. Bush!” bellowed Moore, while half the McKay Event Center audience stood to applaud. The other half jeered.

Half may have been standing, but the other half was not jeering. Perhaps the reporter was sitting next to a section of opposers and couldn’t hear the crowd objectively — perhaps not. As I stated before, there were only a few pockets of detractors and they could only be heard if the majority wasn’t also making noise.
